Strand on the Green Junior School

Remembering Our Queen

Remembering Our Queen

Each year group has spent a little time remembering our Queen this week.

Year 3 linked learning about the Strand Values to the Queen's amazing life. They were particularly impressed by how she showed such commitment, fairness, respect and responsibility. They linked King Charles III role as a leader to our School Council elections next week. They are collaborating to create a letter to our new King with their top tips for a leader, again linked to our Values.

Year 4 looked back over the major events of Queen Elizabeth II's life, reflecting on their memories of the queen and what she meant to them. The children then drew snapshots of her life and symbols that represent her including drawings of her coronation and her corgis.

On Friday afternoon, Year 5 spent time looking at key events during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II such as her coronation and wedding. We looked at members of the Royal Family and discussed the role of the Queen, which is excellent preparation ahead of our History unit on the Victorians. The children created beautiful artworks commemorating the Queen and were able to choose which medium they used.

Year 6 has been exploring the significance of the Queen and her reign, not just to us in the UK, but also around the world, and how it feels as though the event is so momentous that we are 'living through history'. We have looked at the reaction to her death by world leaders and how other countries have marked the event, and have spent time considering why she had such an impact and was so highly regarded. The children have commented on the dedication and commitment she showed in her role and how she was such a stabilising force during a long, ever-changing time in history. As part of their homework, Year 6 will reflect on the Queen's life and decide how they want to commemorate her.
